Best VP Downtown Vegas
Curious to get other members' thoughts on the VP and comps in Downtown Vegas.
My wife and I travel to Vegas a couple of times each year and always stay downtown (much less walking and cheaper gambling than the strip). We each play a bit of everything, but I've recently started playing a lot more VP on our recent trips. We're low rollers and stick with the $0.05 & $0.25 machines (mostly 9/6 JOB and NSUD, along with the $0.05 LDW machine at the D). Our upcoming trip will be the first trip where we pretty much exclusively play VP.
Any thoughts on which casino/group has the best comp program for our level of play? We mostly value the free rooms and comped meals over the cashback offers. Heard great things about the Boyd properties (MSS/Cal/Fremont) and we like playing at 4 Queens (though they just recently removed their $0.05 9/6 JOB, according to VPFree). We like El Cortez too, but don't always make it over there.
Thanks!

That 0.05 cent LDW machine at the D is highest returning machine downtown (101.6). The problem is it is only nickels and still uses coins to payout.
I do mostly Boyd properties (Main Street, California and Fremont). If you tell them to make one of the three your home casino you will get many offers for free nights. Comps for food are easy to get. Also you can catch the Sams Town free shuttle from the California and play at that Boyd property as well.
The Plaza has a new comp program and give away lots of free rooms but the VP is nothing special.

I agree. Play at Main Street mostly. Lots of VP. Really nice rooms and comps. A grown up kind of place, but still walkable to the rest of downtown. My girlfriend and I go without husbands sometimes as we just like to play and we always feel safe and comfortable there. Also, she gets lost in a big casino! Enjoy

Glad to hear the feedback re the Boyd properties - specifically MSS.
My wife has gotten used to the Golden Nugget, and I know MSS rooms and the hotel in general isn't going to be as nice. But, I think I can convince her to stay at MSS on one of our next trips. I'm just hoping that our first stay at MSS has no issues, or we'll be back at Golden Nugget again.
We don't have a problem staying at Golden Nugget, but I feel like we could be taking advantage of the room offers based on our play at the other casinos. We never play at Golden Nugget, mostly because they have nothing good at the $0.25 level, outside of 8/5 BP. So, we never get any decent offers from them.
Any thoughts on the VP at El Cortez? I know they have the Downtown Deuces machines, but those seem to almost always be taken by locals. I'm still a bit of a VP novice, so my DB strategy isn't perfect. All that seems to be left is the regular Double Deuces Wild machines and the Multi Strike JOB machines.
Any thoughts on those machines?

The multi strike machines do have some good games on them at El Cortez but those games eat my bankroll quickly unless I get lucky and hit early.
I do play a bit there though and mostly the full pay DB near the high limit area for quarters. Seems the best games are on multi stike ( as you pointed out)if that is your thing.

My "home "casino always was MSS-clean rooms, good people, great comps etc. We visit Vegas 2-3 times a year, always got free rooms any day, some gaming/dining credits. My last 2 offers were for a Sunday-thurs. stay!!! and my husbands was for 20 % off room, that's it. We are Sapphire card members , so I am not sure if they are tightening their comps. or what. Leaving next week and are staying at Suncoast (got 2 nights free Fri-Sat plus food credit), and are going to try Sunset Station for 2 nights. Will polst how it goes...

This is discouraging to hear. My wife and I wouldn't even be near Sapphire card level, even if we gave all of our annual play to Boyd casinos.
Looks like we will be staying at the Golden Nugget and playing elsewhere downtown unless the offers start coming in.
This may be a dumb question, but we are still novices to the comp system. Is it even possible to get a meal comped at a casino you aren't staying at, assuming your play justifies the comp? For instance, we sometimes like to have breakfast at Magnolia's in Four Queens, but we never stay at Four Queens. How would we go about doing so, if it is even possible?

I am not familiar with Four Queens, but any casino would need some way to evaluate your play at their property to consider a comp. If you have and use a Player's Card with them, seek out a host or Casino VIP Services and ask them to look at your play. The worse that will happen is that they will politely say that you do not qualify for a comp from them, based on your play there.
At the larger casino groups, like CET or MGM, your tier status and play is portable to any of their properties, regardless of where you are staying.

Try The D. We have been going there a few times a year over the past 5 years (formally Fitzgeralds)

We stay downtown maybe twice a year, as our play is mostly elsewhere in Vegas. In my opinion, rooms at the all non smoking Rush Tower of the Golden Nugget are the best around! We had a 3 night comped stay at MSS and agree with the OP here that the rooms are not as nice.
As far as video poker, we do well at the Golden Gate every time . . . but have never stayed there.
