Too late to make the move?

Seriously thinking of moving from Michigan to LV. Will be 55 in April, single, little debt and enough savings to make a cross country move and not worry. Been a real estate broker for 20 years and license would transfer so finding something to keep me busy shouldn't be a problem. Question is has anyone else done it or know of someone who has at this age? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Tony I just talked to the sister on a business aquaintance who moved out to Las Vegas 1 year ago. The person who made the move is absolutely loving it; their spouce passed away 2 years ago and the Indiana winters were taking their toll. This person is about your age.   I read the other day that the cost of living is low in Las Vegas but you probably allready know that. Being single and in your position should only help you with your decision.    I myself could quite possibly be out there permanently in 3 to 4 years.   Good luck to you.

Thanks Ted! Lots of research has gone into this and yes, from what I can determine the cost of living is significantly lower than here in the Detroit area. The thought of another winter like last years is helping me. Came home from a week trip to LV last January to -12 degrees and 15 inches of snow!

I totally agree with tedlark.....and I agree with your previous points already made about the advantages and benefits of moving to Vegas.I am in very similar circumstances myself in terms of life, and moving to Vegas is attractive.....actually ANYWHERE in Nevada is more attractive than most of New England, in terms of cost of living, and climate. You might consider Northern nevada, i.e Reno....or perhaps even Carson City....they offer much of the same benefits as Vegas without much of the headaches and low points of Vegas, such as less crime and big city blight and congestion.....and (to me the biggest drawback about Vegas), the RELENTLESS Brutal summer heat (late-May/June thru September)...Reno in the summer rarely tops out above 90.You might consider a "trial" run, whereby you arrange to stay in Vegas for at least several weeks (preferably longer) and just "live", to see what it is like and notice any drawbacks or concerns you previously did not see.     I suggest booking at a Extended stay hotel or facility (such as EXTENDED STAY AMERICA) , or perhaps you know some friends who could let you stay for a few weeks......the goal is to experience the everyday, NON-vacation/party experience that Vegas offers.   I would also try and do this during the summer so you can experience first hand the heat on a daily basis without the benefit of a nice climate controlled hotel/casino to escape into  lol!!Either way, good luck and let the forum know your progress....

Thanks DB, spent some time in Reno in the past, eh not for me. I also stayed in Mesquite, did like that area but not sure it's big enough for me. The heat doesn't bother me as I have spent a lot of time in Phoenix and Laughlin.

Like your idea about an extended stay place, will look into that. Worst case is I get out there and it doesn't work out. Can always come back to beautiful Detroit!!!

I have also been thinking of moving to Vegas for many years. I really like the weather there and have always hated the winter in Colorado.

I like the idea of an Extended Stay to try it out and actually see what it's like to live outside the strip area.

I may have to look into that

My wife and i lived our first 30 years in Buffalo, now we have spent the last 30 in Chapel Hill, NC. We leave on tuesday to investigate Tampa and surrounding areas (plus a little VP at hardrock). The older i get, the more i want warmer weather.

While we enjoyed living in NY, CT and Ohio, we are so happy to be back in Michigan, forever. Our beloved Great Lakes, changing seasons and sensational scenery in any direction are but a few reasons for living here! We could move almost anywhere, but stay by choice. We have traveled extensively but have yet to find a better location for our life style. Once, I briefly entertained the idea of moving to Vegas but soon realized that wasn't feasible for us, on many levels.
