It is late at night and I shouldn’t but am enjoying a handful of dry roasted peanuts. What I really miss are the old warm Spanish peanut or redskin vending machines. As a kid in the 1950’s, I made quite a few trips to grants, Woolworths, or one of the local five and dime stores. Some of the stores had the glass case warm peanut vending machine. Once in awhile, I had a nickel in my pocket. If I did, I would put it in the machine and it would dispense a nice little bag of the warm delicious Spanish peanuts. Does anyone remember those machines?

I remember the Spanish peanut machines but they were loose, cold and definitely not in a bag.

Yea. Went to Radio City Music Hall as a rare treat with my parenrs. I was about ten. We stopped at the Automat. It was great as was the show. When I say rare treat, that was a one time event. Money was scarce back then. My mom didn’t work and my dads paycheck was less than 50 bucks a week Actually I should reephrase that. My mom worked non stop raising us kids and taking care of everything around the house.

Went there often. My favorite dish was the $0.15 mac and cheese. Incidentally, for years the Smithsonian National Museum of American History had a wall salvaged from an automat as an exhibit in the basement by the Ice Cream Parlor. The museum underwent a renovation and the wall was gone. Not sure why it was removed. Interesting article about the automat and the then exhibit.

I shed a tear the first time I came across a boarded up Stuckey's while driving on the highway somewhere west of the Mighty Mississippi.

Those warm Spanish peanuts WERE delicious!! I don't remember any vending machines in any stores but my memory of their incredible taste stems from trips my Dad would take his daughters to at the corner bar in the late 50's and very early 60's .
My sisters and I started reminiscing about those trips during a family get together about 10 yrs ago (long after Dad's passing). When my Mom heard these stories of Dad lifting us up on the barstool AND, just taking us THERE... She was livid!!!

OtaBill, thank you so much for the link. I never knew all of the history behind the Automat. I do remember the Dolphin serving the coffee. Thanks again
