Wrote the book on how to tackle. Most of his tackles would be penalties now though.

Ditto!! He was amazing. I remember ( I think it was in 69 or 70, he hit Bart Starr so hard, his helmet went flying and Bart Starr had no idea where he was for a moment.

The best part was that he was a native Chicagoan and never left Illinois for college. Bears 49-74 with him, but he did star in the Rose Bowl. Quite the charmed life.

One retired Chicago Bear once said that he was on the field next to Butkus and actually saw Butkus frothing at the mouth during a game. He then went on to say that he was so glad that he played WITH Butkus and not AGAINST him.
He also stayed married to his high school sweetheart up to the end.

He played in my High School days and when I was up at UCONN. Tried not to miss a game watching the games with my dad when I could.

I just saw him last month in Any Given Sunday on the big screen. He fit right in with the chaos and mayhem.

He was once quoted as saying "Some men are built to be doctors, some men are built to be lawyers. I was built to play football."
