How should states fund education (grade school thru high school?)    Lotteries (and casinos) are NOT the only means for doing this, and in actuality even in states like California (or Maryland), Lotteries and casinos are no where near the primary revenue driver for costs like education.    And Maryland (Balitmore) is a lousy example because their slot revenue is a pittance compared to larger markets like Nevada and AC.The reason Public Education as a whole (HOLE) in much of the USA sucks (and I mean primarily in the LARGE URBAN areas) is a vastly complex issue the touches on everything...government (State, Local and Federal) incompetence and inefficiency, political corruption and hypocrisy, economic inequality, racial inequality, Lack of Good Teachers and LACK of PAY for good teachers.....revenue (funds) is only one issue in this hodgepodge of issues, and quite simply, even if a city or State is FLUSH with cash that is specifically earmarked for EDUCATION (which is of course a fantasy), that does not automatically guarantee that the Education will be "great" in that city or state.....see the above mentioned other "ISSUES" as to WHY.      Anyone who follows politics (espeically at the state and city levels) will readily acknowledge that quite often money that is earmarked for education (at all levels of budgetary relevance; State, city, local and federal) gets cut slashed reduced or even eliminated and shunted to more "pressing or critical" areas during any given fiscal period.....why people/voters continue to allow this is in itself another whole can of worms.      Its a self evident fact that investing in GOOD education for society's young people yields HUGE benefits and dividends down the road. The incessant (and pathological) need on the part of certain people of a certain politcal stripe or philosophy to constantly try and summarize, size up or explain ALL political (and economic and social) issues with OVERLY SIMPLIFIED fallacies is a major reason why nothing ever improves.     People in general would rather believe a SIMPLE straight forward LIE  than a complicated and involved TRUTH anyday.....

Ct requires the tribes to turn over 25% of slot revenue which of course includes vp to the state. I have to wonder what the magic number is where a lower percentage to the state, increased payouts to patrons, and therefore increase in casino business would result in even more money going to the state. Who knows, but they will never decrease that percentage in Ct. Hey Olds, are you following the ongoing saga with MGM Springfield  versus the Connecticut Tribes? The MGM Springfield is supposed to set up about 10 minutes from my house, here in western Massachusetts, but I guaranty you I will NOT be a patron!    I am already so fed up with the way both the State of Massachusetts and its absurd brand of liberalism has made it so hard for the three licenses it has for casino resorts to be issued and utilized.....and I am sick over the abject GREED and narrow mindedness of the various communities who are lining up to claim being "impacted" by the two casinos so far approved here in MAss (the MGM springfiled  and the WYNN in Everett). Now, your two tribes in Connecticut, FOxwoods-Pequot  and Mohegan  want to build a "preemptive"  casino in Windsor Locks/HArtford just down the Highway (I-91) from MGM Springfield....I mean talk about STUPID!     They are just going to be cannibalizing their own Business in the long run!    How can the state of Connecticut allow this?    Those two Indian tribes built their huge casinos on TRIBAL land, and yet now the state is going to allow them to expand OUT and beyond using PUBLIC LAND????For years and year, Foxwoods and mohegan had quaint little monopolies on Northeastern/New England gamblers......they blew it.....I believe they should suck it up and be forced to COMPETE with the new Massachusetts casinos, not simply build another site to try and siphon off business from a yet-to-be-built casino!

There is no doubt about it....in AC, multi line games, especially the pathetic  and clearly rigged SUPER TIMES PAY travesty machines, are clearly.....CLEARLY set to yield VERY poor quality starting hands on the initial deal.......this much is so obvious I am not sure why (1) more players do not complain about it;  and  (2)  Most people simply do not STOP playing altogether games like STP!On STP (and also the three line travesty, good times pay, not to mention the horrible 10 line Dream Card ) whenever a Multiplier finally shows up, the computer chip spits out a pathetic and horrible starting hand (of nothing usually).....this happens with such frequency and regularity it almost is humorous.I did not play much (actually NONE) STP during my recent trip to Vegas so I do not know if this was any different than AC.....

Did you miss anything when you gave your punchlist of reasons why public schools (in your opinion) are bad(?) in the USA?

he failed to include lack of competition as to why public schools are failing in many areas. here is what i do not understand. if some folks believe casino taxes in nevada should be higher to support state programs, how can they at the same time advocate playing VP in nevada? i would think as a matter of principle, they would only play at casinos where taxes are higher and thus paytables are likely to be reduced. if they want casino employees to make more, they should probably play at casinos that offer reduced payouts. everytime one of these socially concerned folks buy something on sale or a reduced price, don't they realize this will result in less sales tax collected? less sales tax means less money to fund all the needed governemnt programs they believe in. don't these folks care about the kids, the needy, the unionied employees who get to retire at an earlier age than most workers in the private sector. or, do they just want someone else to pay.

There is no law banning these same "socially concerned" people from giving more in taxes than the tax schedules say they may owe. Some of these same "socially concerned" people hire tax professionals to get every deduction they may be entitled to, why not just pay pay pay.

As for competition for the public schools, there are: private institutions and charter schools all over the place. Oh wait, that would require spending more money. How about looking at it as an investment and not just spending money?

while i have no idea how the 'offer' system works at any casinos, it always seems i get the most offers, the less i go to a place. once they have you, they take advantage of you.
I'm totally with you on this.

To me, it seems that casino marketing puts players into one of three categories:

1. Here's a newbie, let's make sure they come back.

2. They're a regular, we don't have to do much for them.

3. They've left us, let's try to get them back.

have you noticed that some who advocate inceasing income taxes, like warren buffet, give all their money to causes, other than the government. if they believe that the government is a wise spender of their money, leave their billions to them. we have a way to increase school competition without costing more and maybe even spending less, it is called vouchers.

As for competition for the public schools, there are: private institutions and charter schools all over the place. Oh wait, that would require spending more money. How about looking at it as an investment and not just spending money? How about the vast majority of people who cannot afford private school or charter?   These kids get the short end automatically simply because they were born under the wrong economic sign? Here is an undeniable fact:    The USA ranks well below MOST advanced (non-third world) nations in most educational metrics, certainly in the most important fields like math and science......countries like the socialist nations of europe and the rigidly governed and structured nations of ASIA (whether it is a rigid government like China or a rigid culture/society like JAPAN) all surpass the USA in terms of education for its children as a whole.Certain things in life (not all but a important few) like healthcare and education should be available to EVERYCHILD regardless of rank, race, creed, color, economic status etc. ...... and I defy anyone to show me how that comes to pass unless a society agrees  to have its government accomplish it. (like happens in many countries around the world.)"Socialism" can be applied in some areas while retaining a so-called "FREE society" "Free Market" type of environment in all other areas.    Besides, most people have no clue at all what "Socialism" actually is or what it means, nor do they understand that here in the USA, we already have "Socialism" (a very inefficient, half-arsed version of it) at work in a number of areas......just not the right ones.
