Re: Major mistake?

how would you have felt if the first drawn card was a K? would you wish you had drawn two cards? after being down a $1k, I would gladly go home close to even. do not care about the math.
That's why I put a question mark after "major mistake", I know the math guys say what I did was a major mistake. I figured I had 2 chances to get back to being almost even if I didn't hold the 3, if the king would have been the first card out of the box I would have kept playing.
I have had the same situation occur many times, if one includes A-2-3-4's, on tdb. and, there are a couple of times that if I had made the correct math play, I would have gotten a much higher payout. but, in many more situations, I drew the 4th needed card on the second draw and sometimes have drawn both, to get the ultimate payout. financially, would I have been better of doing the correct play over time, I do not know.
Same situation for me, right or wrong, it is what it is. I know deep down the math guys are right but their numbers are based on someone that plays all the time over the lifetime of the machine or game. In my case going a few times a month playing single line vp I'm just not going to record that many hands per year, I'm more or less trying to control my losses doing something I enjoy doing every once in a while, I have no fantasies about the possibilities of earning a living playing the game. Most of my vp play is based in Tunica and I cannot and will not be convinced that in this day and time anyone can beat any of the games this area offers up, it cannot be done, not when 3% of every handpay is taken by the state and can't be offset. I kid you not I played only 99.57% for 2 consecutive years, used every offer there was available, took advantage of all my free play and got destroyed by those machines.

I rarely hold the kicker when dealt trip aces. To me; there are still 11 other kicker cards I could catch with a drawn ace if I discard the dealt kicker.
Each to their own...

That was quite a sting to say the least. But, I agree that you made the best decision based on your situation. Dust yourself off; and be grateful you didn't lose as much as you could have without that $800. Easy for me to say, though...
It did sting quite a bit, I kept saying you idiot you know to hold the kicker in that situation, punished myself all the way home. The only other time I did something this dumb was playing $2 DDB at max play and the machine was hitting flushes like crazy, I was way up for the day and was dealt Ace of diamonds, crap, crap, crap and a 10 of diamonds, I told myself to hold the 10 but didn't and sure enough first card on the deal was the K,Q,J of diamonds. I immediately quit that day also but that haunts me to this day, math guys say don't hold the 10 but that $8k hit would have been nice.
I'd have a hard time forgetting that one myself....I know I have too many "coulda, woulda, shouldas" myself. I'm guessing we're not alone....

The life of a vp player, I guess it's no different than anything else. Back in 1979 we were playing in the state finals at a beautiful packed stadium, score was 1-0 them in the bottom of the last inning, I come up with 1 out and hit a single to center field. Our best hitter comes up to bat against what I know is a tough pitcher, I'm begging for the steal sign or a hit and run, nothing from the coach. I'm a senior so I've really got nothing to lose and I know I can steal second off this guy, wanted to, everything in me told me to go, but I stood fast with the coach. Pitch counts is 2-2 and I look at the coach again looking for a sign, nothing, I decide I'm taking off as soon as the pitcher let's go of the ball but I couldn't make myself do it. Guy ends up hitting a shot down right field line, I take off running and am screaming toward 3rd with zero intentions of stopping because I know the next 2 batters are weak hitters. The coach is jumping up and down screaming for me to hold up, I do despite everything telling me to go for it. Coach is playing the numbers and odds, 1 out, man on second and third, he likes his odds, the numbers are in his favor. Next batter gets an intentional walk as I expected to load the bases. Next 2 batters up go down swinging, can't even touch the ball and the game ends, we lose 1-0. That was 1979 and I ran into my old coach at a golf tournament just a few months ago and he said I should have gave you the steal sign and there was no way I should have held you up at third, no question that series of events still haunted him to this day, me too, I should have ran. Ah, those coulda, shoulda and wouldas, still coming back to haunt some of us 37 years later. One never knows what random sets of circumstances will deliver.

Doesn't the math say you have two of fortyseven shot of getting the Ace by dumping the kicker, as opposed to one in fortyseven with the kicker.
Without the fourth Ace, the kicker is useless.
The math gets complicated but I would guess the more frequent occurrence of hitting four Aces makes up for the lower payout, but I'm not familiar with the payouts

hell of a good story. here is another one. we were playing for our county basketball champs in senior year late 70's, had a real good team. we were also noted for boozing it up at every opportunity (couple of pot smokers too). the night before final game, I convince the guys to spend at my family's house, no booze, clean fun. next day, got our butts kicked.
not sure what the moral of the story is, how about some help, ted.

Staggering to see misinformation even by those who have the guts to play Triple Double Bonus.
I'll make a comment and take a definitive stance on it:
HOLD THE KICKER WITH THE TRIP ACES EVERYTIME
When a player transitions from Double Double Bonus to Triple Double Bonus, the sole difference that will happen is a player will make an even more expensive sacrifice on the trips payout for the big time quads+kicker opportunity. You have to give yourself the absolute best chance at hitting those hands, or else changing games like that is a pointless move.
If players make mistakes while playing, it should be as small as few cents apart hopefully. In this situation that arises about 1 in 1300 rounds (or once every 2 hours), for dollar players, the difference is at least $18. That in itself will be a slam dunk decision. $800 is only a drop in the bucket for the proper bankroll requirements needed to handle playing this game through comfortably.
My advice to you KK, stick with Double Double Bonus if your running low on funds to play video poker as a hobby. Also, you have no control over what gets drawn after you make the hold and press the button.

This is why I don't even care about session stats. It's all just one giant session. The house already has an edge against you, don't make it any worse. You just have to make the correct play every time. Stop thinking in terms of sessions.
This KAA3A hand could just as easily have been the first hand of your next session, in which case you likely would have kept the AA3A like you were supposed to.

I have to say KO, I would have done the same thing in that situation. Reluctantly though. With the horrible streaks both you and I have gone through in the last few years, it is no wonder we are gun shy. Unfortunately, the math works over infinity. There is no guarantee it will work out on one's lifetime. I hope it does though for all of us. By the way, I hope we all have very long and good lifetimes. That way, we have a better chance of the math catching up to us.

In my not so humble opinion, if you don't have the balls to hold a kicker while playing TDB, you really shouldn't be playing TDB! I sure tend to avoid it (except for contests)...I'm a wuss!!
If you never hold the kicker in TDB, that costs you 0.74% in return overall from that error ALONE!!! So that means if 9/7 TDB and 9/6 DDB are both available to you. If you aren't holding the kicker, you really should be playing DDB!!!
And think of it this way. Which is the most valuable hand of these 3 in TDB? Which is the worst? AAA + kicker, AQJT suited, or AAA only?
Hint: AQJT suited is NOT the best.
All this being said, I'm glad you still hit Aces regardless of the mathematically correct hold.

AAA only is the worst.
The hint you've provided was very intriguing. I had to look it up and find out that the winner is AAA+Kicker. It is not possible to have AAA+Kicker and 4 to a Royal at the same time though.
AAA + Kicker (97.12765 EV)
AQJT Suited (4 to a royal) (9/6 is 92.4 EV, 9/7 is 93.3 EV)
I too will not be playing TDB on a regular basis. Probably for some rare potshots.
