kjohn,
Sounds like a great trip especially with the hits and staying at RR and GVR.
Did you see much difference between RR and GVR? We have only stayed at RR and twice played at GVR but never stayed there. Curious as to how you liked RR's sister for accommodations, service, meals, etc.?

Hey LL, I stayed at GVR for years before RR was built. Now we get offers at both so we usually split up our stay. Not too difficult as we always rent a car and travel light. As for the differences...Rooms...RR rooms are larger as is the bathroom, which has two sinks. If you get a room at the end of the hall it's a long walk..All in all the rooms are top notch. Pretty, clean and comfy. We stay in the East wing of GVR and it is still nice and a bit newer that the West wing. The tub is a more practical size and I actually use it. I don't like those huge tubs. Most rooms have just one sink...The bedding is divine. I've actually ordered their pillows..It's not as new as RR and the rooms show some wear but clean and well decorated. Both are fine with me. Food...I like the Original Pancake house at GVR much better than the cafe at RR...The baked omelets for Breakfast are amazing...and of course the pancakes are wonderful....As for the feast, its about the same. GVR has the seafood on the weekends which is a plus. We don't usually eat at the high $$$ restaurants but I would imagine both places are good. If it's a snack you want I actually like the food court at GVR better. Not as crowded with the movie crowd and kids....Oh and GVR has coffee pots in the room. I like the staff at GVR better...or maybe it's just that I can't stand my assigned casino host at RR. Casino...Both have their good pt's..A lot just depends on what you play...I like the simple older games and don't play the new ones and GVR offers plenty of the kind I like..The machines for the most part are older but I sort of like that...One of the reasons we stay at both places is that both have their charm...and good machines if you find a winning one...Old world charm vs. newer charm. Pretty much a toss up. We like staying at GVR towards the end of our trip as it's closer to the airport and I like to play some at the M and it's a short hop from GVR... Next trip we'll probably do the same thing...In my estimation there isn't a better buffet than the one at the M. It surpasses anything I've ever had off the strip. I play there enough to get the free food but I'm a bit disappointed with the machine choices..I seem to shy away from those multi-game boy machines and they don't have many progressive and no full pay that I could find. But they do have a few banks of good machines and the place is sparkling clean. You can't beat the staff.....Smoke....GVR is smoker that RR but they do have a non smoking area and it actually has some good machines...If I had only two days to stay and had to stay in one place I'd probably choose RR. But with a few more days for our visit I'd still do a bit of both....You could definately stay at GVR and not be disappointed.

kjohn,
Thanks for the review of GVR. The hallways at RR are really "long" if you are at the end. We usually get a canyon view. Sorry to hear about your RR casino host, we had a good one, John Trovato, but as of last week he is no longer working at RR. So we have a new one Esther Fort. She indicated she was a contract trainer of casino hosts and then hired on at RR. Glad to hear about the meals and buffet at M. Makes sense to finish up at GVR since it closer to the airport.
Hopefully, we can get out to Vegas before summer and take advantage of the RR pools/views.

Good luck with Esther. She is the one I can't stand and I'm a rather easy going person...If you want the low down on her send me a private message and I'll fill you in...Don't want to say anything too terrible in the open forum..KJ

We always ask for a room near an elevator in any casino and this works best for us on several levels. Granted walking is good for us after a few buffets. However, we often agree to meet at the room. I feel safer and as if it's a security benefit not to have to walk down a long deserted corridor late at night to get to our room.

A very good pt. about security. My hubby retires a lot earlier than I do and I've been uncomfortable on occasion walking alone to our room, especially if I've won anything...You never know who was watching you.. I like the system at both RR and GVR where you need the room card to get onto the elevator or into the room area....However the door it GVR was not working correctly and stayed ajar unless you pulled it shut...NOT good so I reported it....

Several casinos where we have stayed for years require you to show your room key to a guard as you approach the elevators, especially at night. A problem here could be where someone saved an old room key or flashed a players card or another hotel key in similar color to that particular room key. Guards have never actually scrutinized my room keys. Venetian is one where you show the guard your room key and Mirage may still have that policy. There could be a problem with merely using a room key to activate the elevators. If a few people show up for an elevator, one will activate the elevator with their room key and others unrelated could enter that same elevator. Someone without a room key could easily slip on to that elevator. If someone left their key in their room and their partner were already there, this would work to gain room access. Also, there are usually house phones near the elevators. Usually dialing O will get an operator to ring your room for you. These are handy to check the room if there is a change of plans or you want your spouse to meet you at the elevator to help accompany your wins. Be discrete in case others are listening..."meet me at the elevator" or "I'm on my way up in the elevator" should suffice, instead of screaming "JACKPOT" for others to hear. I have used this technique but not nearly often enough!
