Royal flush?

I have NEVER hit a royal flush. But I'd like to hear about people who have and what they were doing. I have a friend that hit one in about 2 minutes once. He walked away with $1,000 or something after a few minutes of play. But I can never get it.
I think I go for it more than I should but that should mean I at least get one sometime! So sad. I think I would do a lot better if I forgot about a royal flush and played smarter for smaller wins. But how to resist that big payout?
Is it smart to go for a royal flush if you have 3 cards to draw? Like holding a King and Jack of spades? What about 2 cards, or do people only try if they have one card to go?

In 6 years of playing about 100 times a year, I have hit 39 Royals. 31 were single deck; 8 were multi deck. One was for $1000, 21 were for $2000, 16 were for $4000, and one was for $20,000. I hold three and four cards always, unless I have three to a quad, etc. I hold two to a Royal is I have nothing else. I have pulled Royals from one card, two cards, three cards and four cards. I have been dealt one natural Royal but this was on a multi where I am told it is easier. I have been told by experts that my Royal stragety is a money loser, but I am happy with it. However, because all I play is DDB, I have done much better with 4 Aces and a Kicker than Royals. 4 Aces and a Kicker is my bread and butter jackpot. I have hit this one on 50 cents, $1, $2, $5, and $25. For me, it is the best hand in video poker!!

I've hit 3 Royals in the past 2 years - all at Foxwoods, all on single play Bonus Poker machines. IIRC, I held 3 twice, and once it was just a Queen.

I have had several RF's most exciting was a progressive for 1900.00. My husband and I had had a little tiff so I went to our room while he spent several hours playing for it. When I came back down I sat with him and had been playing about 1/2 hour when I got the Royal flush. I had to throw out a jack to a pair but I was lucky and got the right card to make a royal flush.

I have had numerous royals but only one dealt royal. The machine automatically held all five cards and started to pay - I thought it was a fault with the machine until a split second passed and I realised it was a royal. As it it the highest hand perhaps a friendly programmer did it to stop an idiot from holding the ace alone.

I have had 2 RFs in the past year not counting the one I accidently threw away as it was dealt to me and I got so excited that I accidently hit the wrong button on the unfamiliar machine and instead of holding the card, I hit the draw button...............boo hoo for me. I sat there in stunned disbelief for a couple of minutes. The boys in the security room must have had a good laugh!!

I have had 3 Royals in one day starting at a gas station and then at two separate casinos. I have also got dealt a Royal on a quarter from a 3 multi line machine at a Texaco gas station. I was setting next to a guy at Sunset Station who was playing dollars on a 10 line machine and it dealt him a Royal.
