Huh? Playing short pay for a million hands does not guarantee a loss any more than playing +EV doesn't
guarantee a win. You're results SHOULD be better on the better play, but in vp nothing is guaranteed. This is absolutely a fact.  Posted odds are only a representation of the potential results of playing a particular game.   They are useful, but don't in any way affect your actual results.  Into infinity the game may creep closer and closer to the posted odds.  The lifetime of an individual player is sadly much shorter...
I was vague on my part with regards to short pay after million rounds. I should have stated that all these analysis is based on playing without any mailer/bounceback offers, casino club cash back, or promotions/contests. If the curves shifts 1.1% return due to a shorted flush on 9-5 DDB based on what I saw for 9-6 DDB, hardly anyone would be an outright winner if they did not have anything aided for their play. Thus does not mean people will not be able to get any value playing at a place that only has 9-5 DDB; if the place offers good packages for people to go to it can make it worthwhile.

But bottom line is to play at the best paytables, your average overall result will be better, but it is indeed random chance whether one is an overall winner or loser. I did learn on high variance games that it requires millions and millions of rounds, people might not live out to play that long if the game is just a recreational hobby to them.

Playing the best pay tables lets you play longer with the same money which gives you more chances of hitting a jackpot. It does not guarantee you will. I know most forum members know this, but some new players may not.   I always seek out the best pay tables I can find and if I'm forced to play a really stinky game I play single coin quarters and let it go at that.  I guess I'm getting picky (or smarter) in my old age.

Put another way: dropping from 9/6 to 9/5 DOUBLES the house advantage.

Yes, we know on paper that 9/5 has an extra percentage theoretical edge than 9/6; thus if 9/6 has about a percent theoretical edge, the shorter pay is doubled.

However, there is more to it in a high variance game. What Fla Phil and misterlister is trying to get at is that most recreational players do not play towards the infinity space to get the return. Most avid players may go through 1 to 2 million rounds in the time allocated for the hobby.

As graphs may show, a person above average luck on 9-5 DDB may have better outcome than a person with below average luck on a 9-6 DDB, provided both have played 1 or 2 million rounds perfectly. It would take a few millions rounds for a player with perfect execution on 9-6 DDB to be in better shape than a player on a shorter pay. Of course if you can have access to the better pay table, always go for it. On high variance games, you must look into playing high volume to achieve theoretical results, so my best advice is to prepare for the worst (find constant ways to grow that bankroll over time).
