poker: cash out or keep the credits in

Post by aqu »

The machines on the floors keep revising the way they give out winnings. It used to be that they would drop the chips / coins every time you won. Then you would starts again. Now I see more and more that they are becoming "credit based", keeping your winnings on credit until you decide to cash them out. I suspected that this was done to keep the player close to the machine, and possibly lose what you have won when thinking you are "on a roll". The service manager assured me that this was not so, but then I saw that the newer machines also offer "streak bonuses", in other words encouraging you not to cash out your credits. What do you think is the optimal way to make a profit out of these machines? Has anyone here also encountered what I described, or can you refer me to a source about this issue?

There have been 3 methods. You described the first two. The third method is ticket-in-ticket-out. This latest change lets you cash out at anytime and more to another machine if that is what you want. It is more convienent then cash based machines since it is quick and you don't need to fool with all those coins.

None of these methods have any impact on your results. The machines are all based on random number generators and they all have the same similar internal programming. Your results are always a simple manner of exactly when you press the deal/draw keys. There is no "optimal" way to play machines in the sense that you mean. For video poker the optimal approach is to find the best pay tables and use expert play techniques.

If you are a VP player then I would advise picking up a copy of one of the many VP books. Linda Boyd's "the Video Poker Edge" is a good choice as are any of the "Frugal" books by Jean Scott.

I'm sure it slipped your mind but you forgot to mention Rob's book.

I've never read it, but I almost added it as an example of how NOT to approach VP based on the reviews I've seen.

Now for a professional opinion.....Linda Boyd's book is far and away the tool you need here. It has everything educational about vp that you'll find in all of Jean Scott's books combined, her columns and ramblings and it's much easier to decipher. You also get a set of free strategy cards (which I laminated and used as drink coasters) but I know some people like them without having to buy them separately.

Once you learn those basics, my book tells you how NOT to play and why. And since I don't need the money from it to gamble with like all of my guru-friends, I'll be happy to send one out at N/C if you e-mail me. If so, you'll be the 9th or 10th recipient here since I joined.

Hey, if this keeps up you may yet find room in that single car garage for your Yugo.  Only a couple thousand more ...

I don't know where you play, but very few original machines remain in almost any venue. I can't remember the last time (in this century) I saw the original machine on the floors. My friend Jeff in an online authority on the machines and he contributes from his experience to different sources. You can check out here what he has to say: and it's free LINK REMOVED If you want my advice about cashing out or keeping the coins in the machine, you need to decide what kind of person you are. I think that if you are sensible enough to keep track of your wins and losses, you can keep your credits in the machine until you quit.

Thanks BB! My strategy cards are free with my book, "The Video Poker Edge". It took me several years to write and revise the cards (former math teacher/curriculum director) so that they are both accurate and it's easy to find your dealt hand. I used WinPoker--perfect play--to make sure the information was correct plus included exceptions/penalty card situations.

Really do appreciate your kind words! Linda
