Smoke Free in AC

Post by stephmo »

I got an email from the Borgata. They are going totally smoke free inside, and creating outdoor lounges. This will all go into effect as soon as they get approval from the City Council. I guess my days there are over. It's CT for me.

For the patrons who do smoke, this is  huge blow and AC is not helping their predicament of falling revenues. One analyst said he expected another 15-20% loss of revenues from banning smoking as opposed to limiting smoking to defined areas.

Stephmo, they are losing me. That ought to break them. As I mentioned in another thread on this topic, the City council is cutting their collective noses off.  The only rehabilitation done in the city has been through the Casino Redevelopment Fund.  Revenues go down, their share goes down. Did you get the E-Mail invitation to the new Borgata Water Club. It was great, you can make reservations now and in July it will only cost $569 for a Saturday night.

Illinois has been smoke-free since January. I live in St. Louis close to where the Mississippi splits the 2 states.  In the downtown area it has been a good deal for players as people can go on either side of the river depending on their smoking preference. Personally I'm a non-smoker and must say I do enjoy not getting the 2nd hand smoke, but I still go to Missouri casino's that allow smoking - just to mix things up
I have heard of one casino in Illinois (Alton Belle) which is somewhat removed from high traffic area that it is hurting their business.

As a resident of Pa with 2 casinos (The Meadows and Wheeling Island) 30 minutes and 60 minutes away I can tell you most in this region do not even care about AC any longer. There will be those who will make AC plans but that will be for a summer vacation down near the ocean but to go gambling for a day or two it is out of the question. With the installation of table games in Wheeling and a great variety in Pa AC just lost a major part of their business. If you read the comments made by those supporting the ban they want people to leave in fact some of the comments was downright nasty. (visit Press of AC, search smoking ban).

The thing that gets me is that the workers want to see a lose of business they feel it will make their employment stronger.

Pa. casinos is putting a major hurt on AC and it will get worse by the end of the year.

The casinos here in CO went smoke-free on January 1st.  I'm a smoker myself, but I don't think there's much point in complaining about it - it's the way the world's headed.  I've noticed a dropoff in the number of players I've seen at the local places, but the economy might be responsible for that.  When I take a break from my play to go outside for a smoke I don't see many smokers out there - certainly not as many as I saw in the past smoking away while they played.

So load up with the nicotine gum, then grin and bear it......on the bright side, I've saved quite a bit on what I spend on my smokes.

Here in Iowa they just passed a ban for smoking in any public establishment, including bars....and you guessed it, the lone exception was the casinos.

RFOM, Calif has been that way for better part of a decade and probably some little pillow biter here in our state started this whole trend. Not a bad idea per se but not fair to those who do choose to smoke. Many cities here banning smoking in public all together. Since 98% of the casinos are on sovereign land, they can't ban the smoking unless the Indian tribes vote it in. Still a mixed crowd on smoking here but leaning towards non.

For some reason I don't see Indian tribes voting to ban smoking unless they receive some "help" in that matter.

The downside is that the nons continue to come into the smoking side and complain about the smoke. Isn't that kinda an elementary decision to make? Don't care for smoke, go to the non-smoking room. Separate entrances and decent air filtration. One person remarked to me that the better games were in the smoking section so to be a smarta$$, I went to go have a looksee and the games were the same and VP paytables were identical.
