Need for Speed?

Curious - I read a lot of talk regarding playing fast and how many hands you can play in an hour. 
 
Why is that an issue?
 
Personally I'm more likely to play less than most just because I'm visitng or just talking to someone playing next to me.  Though most VP players are usually very focused when playing, some like to joke around.
 
Is there any statistical advantage?
