Re: Bob Dancer
I admire the "focus" that the both of you must have to play 8-10 hours at a time and to be successful at it. I am going to continue to practice and hone my skills but I may come back for some help on the "mental" part of the game.
Whenever people talk about doing this for a living I think of a quote that I read from a book Frank recommended in one of his threads. "There are two types of gamblers, those that lose and those that are habitual liars." So I have decided not to quit my day job
Which book was that? I don't remember the quote. This is mostly true of course and refers to pathological gamblers that fool themselves about a great many things. It's not lying so much as it is cognitive distortion (exceptions exist). They may believe what they say. In my recent interview, Dr. McCown surprised me when he told me that most people with serious gambling problems think they are winners. This does not apply to people that keep accurate daily, yearly and lifetime records that could not fool themselves if they tried. This is one of the reasons I recommend so strongly that people keep lifetime records and not look at loss reductions as "wins" if they are down overall.Professional gamblers and pathological gamblers have almost nothing in common. For one thing, all true pros are very good at math. It's a lot harder to confuse losing with winning with a good grasp of math and complete accurate records in front of you. And best of all, knowing math well can never hurt you."There are many areas of life where people can differ in their beliefs and still have a great chance of success. Mathematics is not one of them ..." ~Cogno Scienti~FK

"There are two kinds of gamblers: The losers and the pathological liars."
p.11 of one of the McCown books. That would explain it. Dr. McCown's books only cover problem gamblers. If you listen to the special interview with Dr. McCown on my web site, you'll hear him acknowledge that there are many professional gamblers that do make a living in casinos. Did you post this because you think that all gamblers including professionals are lying about their income?Or did you understand that this quote was about problem gamblers and did not apply to professionals?I'm sure you are aware that there are a lot of people, live poker players in particular, that have done nothing else for a living their entire lives. And of course there are the blackjack players and many other types of pros, not the least of which would be progressive players like myself. Please note: I do not associate with, or know any standard Advantage players and can't comment on their income. I simply have no first hand information.~FK
