It's Better to Be Lucky!

Post by FloridaPhil »

Just returned from our annual three day Thanksgiving Video Poker trip to Biloxi.  The Beau Rivage was all decked out in full Christmas regalia and it was spectacular as usual.  I started out playing quarter deuces and hung in there pretty well considering the odds were stacked against me big time.  Who cares anyway when the place is sooo nice.  Anyway, I got bored the second day and started playing my one coin to 5 coin $1 deuces strategy.  My wife was watching me play when this beauty popped up at max coins.  This probably doesn't look all that good to a big time player, but for me it was wonderful.  A $1000 Royal the week before, then this hand the week after!   I'm enjoying it while my luck lasts...

Great three card draw, Phil.

I agree - The Beau is something special for a non-Vegas casino.

Nice hit!! Did this facilitate a hand pay though? That's BS.

Not a hand pay.  It has to be over $1,199 to get a W2G.   Mississippi takes their 3% out of all hand pays right up front.   I've been told that an out of state resident can apply to get the tax back, but I'm not sure about that.  It doesn't happen to me that often anymore.  I've cut my gambling budget down quite a bit in the last few years and that's a good thing.

Filing a Mississippi state tax return as a Florida resident to try to recover that 3%, Phil, will do you no good - they keep it. Not true, though, in Louisiana. They also take out for state tax on all >$1200 hand pays, but filing a Louisiana state tax return as a Florida resident will allow you to recover what they withheld.

Some VP machines are set for a 'pouch pay' on anything over $1000, kind of a carryover from the coin days. It does not generate a W2G, since it is below $1200, but it does require payment by a floor person.

I've had the hand pay message come up on jackpots as low as $500.  I hit one for $500 at an Indian Casino in Wisconsin a few years ago and they left me sitting there for 30 minutes with the alarm blasting away.  I guess they wanted everyone in the place to know someone had actually won something.
