no gain @100%

Post by b74 »

Jonny goes to the casino to play some vp. A fresh $100 into the abyss the bill is inserted. Jonny plugs away for hours. He has played 2500 hands and to his suprise, he still has his $100. Ironically, he has attained 100% payback. A pair of jacks =0. Jonny has to spend 5 $ and hit jacks or better to still not win. Jonny thinks maybe he did win, hes not sure. It doesnt feel like a win but the math dont lie.

Some days you win, some days you lose.  You don't suppose Jonny snuck over to the ATM and didn't tell you?     Seriously, winning at video poker is not about what happens in a few hours or days, it's about what happens to your bankroll over years at a time.

A personal video poker strategy needs to take into consideration the games available, your skill level, your bankroll and what you are looking to get out of the game.  The professional strategy of riding an edge into infinity doesn't work for me, so I came up with something that does.  Your results may be different.  I'm not a disciple of any strategy except  enjoying what you do.  Playing video poker should be fun, not painful.

phil contrary to what others attempt to spin, I actually admire the fact that, in all of your posts, one thing comes thru loud and clear:   whatever your strategy is and whatever you are doing with respect to VP and the casinos you visit....YOU are definitely enjoying it and having fun!    of this there can be no doubt, based SOLELY on your posts......Obviously I do not know you personally and never met you so I can only go by your posts here, but that is what I surmise.....having said that, in your post above, you make the general statement that a person's strategy needs to take into consideration....."what you are looking to get out of the game..."  (I paraphrased)Can you elaborate a little more on what you mean by this?   I can easily perceive that we all want to get "some profit"  and some entertainment out of playing, that is obvious.....but your statement above and the way you word it seems to indicate something more (even A LOT more) is possible or behind the motivation of people to play VP.

OK, here goes.  I think I'm like most retirees in that I am looking for something challenging to occupy my spare time.  For some reason video poker fills that void.  Maybe it's my computer background or that I like video games, but it works for me.  I have more than enough money, so winning more is not my motivation.  My goal is to play video poker all day and walk out with money left in my pocket.  I hate losing money, so if I walk out even I consider that a win.  I keep my video poker bankroll separate and gauge my long term sucess totally by how much money is in it. I don't need to risk a lot of money to satisfy my desire to play video poker.  My bankroll is small and like everyone it goes up and down, but long term I am slowly but steadily winning.  I do not believe in the video poker strategy of "grinding away with an edge".  I think this is a myth perpetrated by casino operators and people selling the idea to players. There is no doubt that playing 100% games perfectly is the ideal, but you need luck also.  The truth is there are no guarantees in video poker.   I realize this goes against some very strong beliefs , but I'm being truthful about my personal feelings.Another thing that I enjoy very much is playing video poker with my wife on vacation. She works very hard and needs an activity  where she can get away from the office to chill out and decompress.   I am lucky that she loves video poker as much as I do, so we have lots of quality time together sitting at the machines.  We are currently considering buying a second home in Denver so we can spend our summers playing video poker in Black Hawk.  I guess this should open up a bunch of things to talk about on this forum.   Go for it!

Will it mean that you will be known as ColoradoPhil during the summer?

Other than that, great for you and your wife if you consider Denver a second home, it is a good place to be from just visiting here. As for VP, I heard there is many good choices for the quarter player there.

Thanks phil, I appreciate the answer, and like notes1, I agree with everything you described.    Which is why I made the original statement about you at the beginning of this thread
